Saturday night was meant to be a huge night for the A-League, with the blockbuster Sydney Derby shown on prime time on Free-To-Air.

However, just 55,000 tuned in to Sydney FC's 5-0 win over the Western Sydney Wanderers on One. 

The ratings weren't much better for the other two games on Fox Sports that night, with just 59k tuning in to Brisbane Roar v Wellington Phoenix, and 42k for Perth Glory v Newcastle Jets. 

In contrast, the WBBL had a record-breaking weekend in terms of TV viewership.

Up against the Sydney Derby on Saturday night, Sydney Sixers v Melbourne Stars had an average national audience of 422,000 and peaked at 629,000.

Melbourne Renegades v Sydney Thunder also had over 331,000 tuning in.

It continued on Sunday, with 251,000 watching Perth Scorchers v Brisbane Heat and over 420,000 watching Sydney Thunder v Sydney Sixers. 

Meanwhile, 74,000 watched Melbourne City host Central Coast Mariners on Sunday night. 

Along with TV ratings, attendances have been significantly lower across the league in 2017/18. 

The Sydney Derby had just 35k in attendance, compared to 44k for the same fixture earlier this year, and 62k in October 2016. 

Melbourne Victory's attendance against Adelaide United on Friday night was also cause for concern, with just under 17,000 rocking up to Etihad Stadium. The same fixture last season, which was played at AAMI Park, was over 19,000. 

As things are looking, it appears it will only get worse for the A-League.
