Australia’s campaign in Russia is over after their 2-0 loss to Peru on Wednesday morning, but Arzani’s inclusion was a breath of fresh air for the Socceroos.

The 19-year-old trained alongside Cahill when he signed for Melbourne City two years ago and has become his protege ever since.

Arzani came on as a substitute in all three games in Russia and the teenager said it was down to Cahill.

“I don’t think I could’ve come this far without him if I’m being honest, he’s been like my guardian angel,” Arzani said post-match.

“When I’ve made a mistake, it’s not as bad as what it should be. He looks out for me and he’s a top guy.

“He was just saying to me after the game that he was very proud of me and we’ve come a long way together through City.

“It was an honour playing with him in Sochi, he’s a legend of the game and what he’s done for Australia is incredible. We were at this World Cup because of him.”

Arzani said the Socceroos were unlucky to be knocked out after their performances against France and Denmark.

The City winger also explained he relished playing in front of big crowds.

“What I have I learnt about myself? That’s a tough question,” he said emotionally.

“I wasn’t sure how I’d handle pressure before and I guess now I’m OK with pressure. Everyone says playing in front of large crowds is daunting, but I think it actually motivates you to play better.”

There have been rumours Arzani could be leaving Melbourne for a club in Europe, however he said nothing was concrete yet.

Arzani added: “I’m not sure yet, from here I’m heading to London and I’ll be meeting with my agent. I’m going to spend a few days there and try to figure everything out.”
