He might not be going to Asian Cup with the Socceroos - but Portsmouth loanee Alex Robertson is most certainly going places, with clubs from the Premier League, Championship and mainland Europe eyeing off one of Australia’s most vibrant talents.
Revealed by Pompey coach John Mousinho as the first name on his team sheet each week, the 20-year-old midfielder has been instrumental in the south coast club’s charge to the top of the League One ladder.
Since arriving from parent club Manchester City on a season long loan, the Sydney-raised, box-to-box, metronome has accumulated four man of the match accolades, four assists and a goal from 23 high energy appearances.
But that stats barely tell half the tale, with Robertson - whose omission from Graham Arnold’s 26-man squad for Qatar shocked many - rated the most gifted player in the division, let alone Fratton Park, by neutrals and died in the wool Pompey followers alike.
A fusion of physicality, finesse and vision, the youngster’s rise might even result in Pep Guardiola having to decide this month whether to look at concrete offers, with his value rising exponentially.
Everton, for one, have already been reported to be an interested party.
The other scenario is that Robertson remains at Portsmouth, where he has garnered cult figure status, for the remainder of the campaign to help the club seal promotion back to England’s second tier for the first time since 2012.
City, and Robertson’s advisors, will closely monitor the situation this month, with Robertson understood to be happy where he is and in no hurry to make a sudden switch without due consideration.
Still eligible for Scotland, Peru and England after not yet cracking the three-cap threshold for Australia, Robertson had some on social media questioning his continued commitment to the green and gold when he recently deleted a number of Socceroos posts on Instagram.
However, it’s understood nothing should be read into that, and he remains as open as ever to representing the nation both his father Mark and grand father Alexander played for.
