Italian news Agency ANSA reports the 33-year-old, currently playing for Atletico Mineiro in his native Brazil, was found guilty of the 2013 assault which was committed with five other men in Italy.

Another member of the group received the same jail term for the assault on an Albanion woman, however, four other men have so far eluded Italian authorities.

Robinho’s lawyer Marisa Alija said Robinho denied the allegations and would appeal.

“We clarify that he has already defended himself from these allegations, and insist he had no participation in that episode.”

Brazil does not extradite its own citizens to other countries when sentenced to jail.

The striker also previously played for Manchester City in the English Premier League.
