The attacking midfielder has been frozen out by the Serie A strugglers since the beginning of the year, with the 27-year old - signed from Eintracht Frankfurt 14 months ago - told he has no future with the Gialloblu.

Hrustic, forced out of last year’s World Cup with an ankle injury, has made just six appearances for Hellas since his arrival, and needs a move elsewhere to stand any chance of adding to the 24 caps he’s accumulated so far for his country.

Selection for January’s Asian Cup in Qatar is already a bridge too far, but Hrustic, 27, will be looking beyond that point to next year’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers as he seeks to reboot his future..

Now fit again, Hrustic, who is contracted until mid-2026, is still considered worthy of consideration by Australia’s hierarchy, despite falling behind the likes of St Pauli’s Connor Metcalfe and Middlesbrough’s Riley McGree, who have both flourished whilst he’s floundered.

It’s understood that Socceroos coach Graham Arnold visited him in Italy back in September to discuss the path ahead, with the message being that national team selection is contingent on amassing match minutes at club level.

However, Hellas sports director Sean Sogliano has made it clear he has no pathway back into a team languishing second last on the ladder.

Italian sources claim there are on-going financial issues between the club and player, and Hrustic has been treated “poorly” since suffering the ankle injury prior to Qatar 2022.

His last taste of Serie A action came on January 23 when he made a four-minute cameo off the bench in a 1-1 draw with Torino.
