Nestory Irankunda can "go a long way" at Bayern Munich, according his former Joeys teammate and German giants’ resident Aussie Anthony Pavlesic.
Already seven months into his dream move from Central Coast Mariners to Baveria, the Young Socceroos goalkeeper - still just 17 - trains regularly with the senior squad, brushing shoulders with the likes of Harry Kane, Manuel Neuer, Leroy Sane, Joshua Kimmich and the rest of Thomas Tuckel’s star-laden lineup.
He spent four days last month in a Portugal training camp with the seniors and has already debuted for the second team, as well as making regular appearances for Bayern’s U-19s.
Standing 190cm, Pavlesic is advanced for his age both physically and cognitively, and articulates what it means to represent one of world football’s iconic teams with a maturity beyond his years.
He has little doubt Irankunda - who arrives from Adelaide United next season - will thrive in an unrelenting environment where excellence is the only option.
“It’s such a professional environment, everybody knows why they’re here and when Nestory comes he’ll experience another level of football to what he’s been used to,” Pavlesic told FTBL.
“It’s a hard working place and the intensity hits you from day one - there’s a lot more pressure around, it’s a huge league and from a learning perspective there’s plenty of room to grow and develop.
“Nobody will give him a hard time, as long as his attitude is good and he’s willing to work hard everybody will help him. Knowing the ability he has, I’m sure he’ll go a long way.”
Irankunda, who turns 18 on Friday, is slated to parachute straight into the first team squad on arrival mid-2024, with his destiny hinging on how he evolves amid such elite company.
“This is a club where if you’re good enough you’re old enough,” added Pavlesic. “They are always looking to promote the youth players if you’re doing well and just want to get the most out of you.”
Having played with Irankunda with Australia’s U-17s, Pavlesic will ready and willing to help him settle in, and believes he has the capacity to make an impact in Europe.
“Anyone who’s watched him knows how much of a talent he is - it is another level here but he just needs to learn as much as he can, keep his head down and I’m sure there’s enough there for him to make a good career for himself (in Europe).”
Pavlesic is setting no time line or unrealistic expectations on where he might get to on his own journey. He's simply enjoying the ride.
“The biggest thing so far is realising how quickly you have to learn to be at the level of the senior guys,” he said.
“I’ve been in and out with the first team over the last month - you study everything they do, all the tactical and technical things. It shows you where you need to be to reach the standard required to play in the top leagues.
“You’ve got Harry Kane and Leroy Sane firing shots at you and you just have to take it as it comes, do what you do well and learn from every situation.
“In Manuel Neuer I’m also working with one of the best goalkeepers out there, and he’s been unreal.
“You’re always looking to do better in each session than the one before. Everyone helps you where they can - it’s a really positive environment.
"Of course there are different personalities - but there are no bad eggs and the players all look after each other.
“Everyone has there own ego because they’re top professionals but nothing in a negative sense. Everyone is on the same page - it’s all geared to success, whether that’s in the Champions League, the Bundesliga or wherever it may be.”
