Jamie Maclaren will make a definitive decision on his football future once Melbourne City’s season is over, amidst intense interest from the Indian Super League.
FTBL understands the A-League’s all-time leading scorer has narrowed the field down to three clubs - after receiving 12 concrete offers, including City trying to re-sign him.
In addition to India, where champions Mohun Bagan are the leading contenders to snare the 30-year-old striker, there are also options in the Middle East and the MLS.
It’s also believed that contrary to a Melbourne City statement declaring Maclaren would be signing for a club outside the A-League, the penalty box predator has not entirely closed the door on the possibility of remaining in the domestic competition.
However, the smart money appears to be on an offshore move, with Kolkata-based Mohun - already home to Aussies Dimi Petratos, Jason Cummings and Brendan Hamill - offering the off-contract Socceroos attacker a multi-year deal worth $500,000 a season.
Mumbai City, India's other cashed up club, have also shown interest.
Should Maclaren opt for India, and the riches on offer there, it would likely shut the door on any chance of adding to his 32 national team caps, as has been the case with Cummings since his Central Coast Mariners exit.
“It's a bitter-sweet moment for me to leave the club that I've called home for the past five and a half years," he said in a statement on Tuesday.
“I'm incredibly proud of what I've been able to achieve here, both personally and as a team.
"I came here to help bring success to this club and I leave knowing that I played my role in that, where together we've made so many fond memories and shared so much success."
Maclaren, with 154 A-League goals and 115 for City, departs with four Golden Boots and six trophies — including three Premierships and a Championship.
