World Cup hopeful Jamie Maclaren missed the chance to score his fifth goal for Hibernian on an off-day for the Socceroo as his side drew 0-0 at Aberdeen in the Scottish Premier League overnight.
The 24-year-old striker won a seventh minute penalty but was denied by Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis with an unconvincing strike.
Maclaren, who was clattered into by left-back Mark Reynolds from behind to win the spotkick, fired his penalty low to Lewis' right but he anticipated the strike and saved well.
The ex-Brisbane Roar man also spurned a good first-half chance when Niall McGinn's cross found him unmarked at the back post, but he headed over.
Maclaren was replaced after 66 minutes in the goalless draw, with Hibs boss Neil Lennon admitting it wasn't the Socceroo's day.
"You score some and you miss some," Lennon said.
"He didn't strike (the penalty) anywhere near well enough. It's a comfortable save.
"It's not like Jamie, he normally he gives it the laces.
"And he has a great chance with the header 10 minutes later. It just wasn't his day."
The result keeps Hibs in the race for European football with two games to play, including an Edinburgh derby on Thursday morning 4.45am AEST.
Maclaren also spoke in the Scottish press late in the week about his future, with his loan spell at Hibernian from struggling German 2.Bundesliga club Darmstadt due to expire at the end of the season.
Darmstadt currently sits inside the relegation zone with two games to play.
"I'd like to (come back) but it's really out of my control; it's out of Hibs' control as well," Maclaren said.
"All I can do is focus on these next three games: head down, do what I can in front of goal, and just win games.
"There have been discussions but until they stay up or are relegated, you take it week by week."
