Caitlin Foord's second match after joining Arsenal in January 2020 was a final of the women's League cup.

Though they lost to Chelsea, giving Sam Kerr her first English winner's medal, it seemed honours would not be far away. Arsenal were the current league champions, after all.

However, COVID-19 intervened, prompting lockdowns in both England and Australia, leaving the New South Walian stranded in London.

With women's soccer in England a casualty of the shutdown, there were not even matches to keep her occupied.

When the games restarted, Arsenal reached another final, in the FA Cup, but lost to Chelsea again, with Kerr scoring twice.

Then Joe Montemurro, the coach who bought her to England, left Arsenal for Juventus.

Arsenal subsequently have stuttered, but on Sunday at Selhurst Park in London, they finally won a trophy, ending their longest drought since 1992.

The 3-1 victory in the women's League Cup final against Kerr's Chelsea was richly deserved.

For Foord and fellow Matilda Steph Catley, their first success in England was long overdue - Kerr having won eight medals during the same period.

"It's incredible to finally win a trophy with this club - it's something special," said Foord.

"That's what we're aiming for, winning trophies. It's worth being freezing in the champagne shower - no complaints, super happy.

"It's been four years since we won a trophy and it's well overdue. We wanted to leave everything out there and we wanted to show what we can do and we want to continue to do that."

Jonas Eidevall, Arsenal's manager said of his Australian duo: "They were excellent today.

"Some players been here for several years and have a lot of memories and been close but not winning, so I am really happy for them."
