Africa Cup of Nations aspirants Mauritius are targeting their Australian diaspora, with gifted Central Coast Mariners midfielder Miguel Di Pizio top of the hit list.
The world’s 177th ranked nation, a mere spec in the Indian Ocean nestled off Africa’s east coast, are also interested in recruiting the 18-year-old’s older brother Gianni, currently on the books of NPL side Sydney Olympic.
Both were part of the Western Sydney Wanderers academy before moving together to Central Coast.
Miguel, who came off the bench in Sunday’s 3-0 win at Macarthur, has represented the Joeys and is earmarked as a future Young Socceroo, making it likely he’ll spurn the approach from the island his mother hails from.
However Gianni, 20, is believed to be receptive to their overtures, with Mauritius also looking at attracting ex-Perth Glory and Wanderers midfielder Nick Sullivan, currently with NPL side Apia Leichhardt and ex-Macarthur youngster Stephan De Robillard, now at Sydney United.
Top target Miguel has been a minor revelation for Mark Jackson’s table topping Mariners with two goals in 14 appearances, nine of which have come off the bench in what has proved a breakthrough season for one of Australia’s most promising young prospects.
Di Pizio, endowed with silky touches and vision beyond his years, is playing the long game at Central Coast, spurning and offer to join a Danish club to continue his development domestically.
Mauritius are in the midst of an arduous World Cup qualification campaign, sitting second last in their six-team group with one point from two games, a goalless draw against Angola and a 3-0 loss to Cameroon.
