Motherwell confirmed McDonald, 33, was among eight players to leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of this month.

Melbourne-born McDonald was chased by Western Sydney Wanderers and Newcastle Jets in January but the Scottish club wanted a transfer fee, scuppering any deal.

The 26-time Socceroo could have triggered a contract extension at Motherwell after 39 appearances and 11 goals in all competitions.

McDonald battled injury throughout the second-half of the 2016-17 season but helped 'Well stave off relegation.

The former Celtic striker hasn't played domestically in Australia since leaving Gippsland Falcons for Southampton in 2000.

McDonald's clubs abroad include Celtic, Middlesbrough, Wimbledon and Millwall.

“I want to thank everyone who will leave Fir Park for the last time as a Motherwell player," Robinson said.

"There are a lot of lads there who have played a lot of football for this club … and it's important we acknowledge that.”

McDonald, who never scored for Australia, hasn't played for the Socceroos since August 2012.
