Socceroo veteran Mark Milligan has defended coach Bert van Marwijk’s line-ups at Russia 2018.
Australia was knocked out of the World Cup on Wednesday morning (AEST) after a 2-0 loss to Peru in Sochi.
van Marwijk stuck with the same line-up in the first two games and made just one change against Peru, with Tomi Juric replacing the injured Andrew Nabbout.
It took until the Peru game for Tim Cahill to play and many fans on social media have criticised van Marwijk for his decision.
The decision to start Robbie Kruse over young gun Daniel Arzani against Peru also raised eyebrows, however Milligan defended the Dutchman’s calls.
“They’re not here every day and they have no idea,” Milligan said post-match.
“You don’t get a more experienced coach than Bert, so if people know enough to be questioning him, then they know more than me.
“Bert did a wonderful job and maybe it would’ve been nice to have him around a bit longer just to see what he did in a short time.
“I really enjoyed this tournament even though the results weren’t there. I’ve enjoyed seeing this team grow.”
Milligan was part of the last four World Cup squads, but his tournament debut in 2014 was cut short due to a hamstring injury against Chile.
The 32-year-old is also unsure about his future with the national team.
“It was nice to stay fit and be a part of it, it’s been a lot of hard work over the last four years,” he said.
“It’s been a long and tiresome qualification campaign and that’s what makes it the hardest now, we played so well and we fell short.
“It would’ve been interesting if we got through, but it wasn’t to be. I guess it’s nice knowing it was in our control and maybe we fell short in a few areas.
“It wasn’t that we were dominated at all, we weren’t dominated at any stage of this tournament, so I guess that’s good and bad.
“It’s been a long three years, I think this team has come a long way and I think we deserved a bit more, in football you don’t always get what you deserve.”
