Montgomery, who has guided Hibs to fourth on the Premiership ladder since taking charge in October, already has Socceroos Martin Boyle, Lewis Miller and Jimmy Jeggo on his books, plus a confirmed interest in signing Adelaide’s Musa Toure in January.

And with a multitude of Aussies already scattered around Scotland’s top flight, he doesn’t see the influx ending any time soon.

“Aussie players offer good value and once they get to Europe their value can sometimes go silly, so it can be a good investment,” Montgomery told FTBL.

“I know that market very well and it’s one we’re always keeping an eye on. I know Australian players can succeed here in Scotland - that’s been proven time and again, and I have no doubt that can continue.”

It was only a matter of time before Montgomery was repatriated to Britain after his miracle weaving with the Mariners, and the Edinburgh club’s only two league defeats in his seven games in charge have came against the top two, Celtic and Rangers.

In keeping with his dedication in blooding young talent, Montgomery has given minutes to 16 year old Rory Whittaker and Rudi Molotnikov, 17, in recent weeks and believes age is no impediment to performance. Hence the interest in 18 year old Toure.

“I know most of the kids in Australia and I track their progress and watch as many games as time allows,” he added.

“We’re looking at players across the world who are coming off contract at the end of the season and Musa is one of those.

“He’s a young player we’ll be watching. There’s nothing concrete and there have been no discussions (with Adelaide) but he fits a certain profile of what we want to bring in.

“A lot of clubs are looking at the A-League now and I think what we achieved with the Mariners (in winning the championship) showed what can be done with a small budget, so long as you can identify and bring on young players.

“I think a lot of club owners in the A-League are wondering why they spend so much money and then not really getting anywhere at the end of the season.”

Montgomery is relishing the increase in eye balls and pressure in a rabid football environment north of the border.

“It doesn’t matter what job you’re in there’s always pressure and I’m at a big club where there’s pressure on every game because the fans expect success.

“When I came in the club was down at the bottom - but we’re making progress. I just try and concentrate on what we’re doing week to week.”

Montgomery is pleased with his Aussie triumvirate, with both Boyle and Miller looking nailed on for Graham Arnold’s Asian Cup squad for January.

“I’m happy with all three - and they’re real assets for the club,” he said. “We know we’ll be losing a few in January and that will hit us hard. We’re trying to prepare for that now, and hopefully we’ll be having a few long term injuries coming back around that time.”
