The Urawa Reds man could be out for six months after injuring his shoulder in the 1-1 draw to Denmark in Samara.

van Marwijk started Nabbout against France and Denmark, however was unable to make an impact on the scoreboard.

Nabbout missed out on the 2-0 loss to Peru in Sochi which saw Australia eliminated from the tournament.

The 25-year-old had just four caps to his name before the World Cup and thanked the boss for giving him a chance.

“It’s huge for any player and considering I’m not naturally a No.9, I’m naturally a winger,” Nabbout told FourFourTwo.

“The fact he constantly had faith in me in that No.9 role was huge for me. Whenever I’m thrown up there, I’m going to be very confident.

“Bert was massive for us, the whole environment that brought with him and just the way he’s made us so structurally sound throughout this tournament is a credit to him and his coaching staff.

“Also the boys and how well we’ve adapted, the massive change in system from the previous coach to this coach.

“It’s tough for any team to adapt, the speed in which we did adapt was a credit to us, so he’s been a huge help for us.”

Nabbout is now off to his hometown, Melbourne, to begin his recovery and it could be touch-and-go for the Asian Cup in United Arab Emirates in January.

He conceded he felt frustrated watching the Socceroos go out in Sochi on the sidelines.

“We’ve had a long journey to get here and we had a few lapses in concentration,” he said.

“It’s been a long journey and I’m proud of the boys because they put in a solid effort, but it’s frustrating I couldn’t do anything to help.”
