Canberra CEO Heather Reid provoked a storm yesterday when she told Matilda and Australia women's cricketer Perry to choose between the sports.

Today the club insisted they were not asking anything from from Perry than other players in the squad -and highlighted the fullback had made just six starts in 12 Canberra games last season.

Crucially she missed Canberra's finals matches as she was in Sydney playing for the Australia women's cricket team against New Zealand.

“The club is simply asking for a commitment from Ellyse that is equal to the rest of the squad," said Reid today.

:This means she needs to be available to train in Canberra four times a week and be part of the total club environment.

“This is no different to our other interstate players such as Hayley Raso, Caitlin Cooper and Michelle Heyman who make Canberra their home for the duration of the Westfield W-League season.

"This is crucial for the development, morale and strategy implemented by the club.

She added: “Canberra United has total admiration for Ellyse Perry and what she has achieved and we’d like nothing more than to see her re-sign for the club for Westfield W-League Season 5 in 2012/13 but it now seems that is unlikely.

“Ellyse has the full support of Canberra United and there is no animosity or ill-feeling from either party. We will actively help Ellyse in her pursuit of another club,”

Today Perry again spoke of her gratitude to Canberra for the last three seasons she's spent there - making 25 appearances and scoring twice - but said she was committed to continue playing both sports.

''I've been very fortunate to be involved with Canberra United for the last three W-League seasons and I am truly grateful for the opportunity the club has provided to play and be involved in a game that I love," she said.

"The changes that the club have taken and the new direction and philosophy the coach, Jitka Klimkova, has about how the team needs to be run is one that I totally respect and understand.

"However, I still want to pursue my goals of playing both cricket and football at the highest possible level and as such I feel it is important for me to explore avenues which enable me to do so.

“I thank Canberra United and its wonderful community for all their great support over the last three seasons and I wish everyone involved at the club the very best for the future and in defending the W-League title next season.”
