Head coach Ricardo Gareca said on Tuesday that Peru had big hopes at this year's World Cup, but are leaving Russia with their heads held high.
"I had bigger hopes for this tournament, but I want to congratulate my colleagues with the win, as it was a very difficult game from psychological point of view. We were playing for the win, our players did their best. They showed courage. I would like to thank our fans, they have always supported us and we gave them another win. We are leaving World Cup with our head high," Gareca said.
Peru beat Australia 2-0 in their final group C game at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi. Both teams failed to reach the knockout stage and were eliminated from the tournament.
France qualified top of Group C with Denmark in the second place.
