After just two Championship appearances for Sunderland in six months, Olyroos defender Nectar Triantis’ switch to Hibernian on loan is beginning to look like an inspired decision.
A peripheral presence at the Stadium of Light following his move from Central Coast, Triantis, 20, has been thrown in at the deep end in Edinburgh under the watchful eye of coach Nick Montgomery, the man who gave Triantis his debut for the A-League champions in 2022.
It’s been something of a blur since with the centre back spirited to Wearside amid great expectations.
But, amid intense competition at a level he concedes was a considerable “step up”, Triantis opted for the Scottish Premiership in search of minutes and has already made eight appearances in all competitions for Montgomery’s side - playing in a largely unfamiliar midfield role in the 2-0 weekend Scottish Cup loss to league leaders Rangers.
Speaking ahead of Thursday morning’s (AEST) trip to struggling Ross County, Triantis expressed his satisfaction at how life north of the border is panning out.
“I thought I did quite well against Rangers and having that ability to play in both positions gives you the best chance of picking up as much game time as you can, and is good personally,” Triantis told FTBL.
“But at the end of the day it’s more about team results than individual performances. The loan was all about getting more minutes at a good level and I just need to push on from here.”
Triantis fell short of expressing frustration at being unable to crack regular senior football for the Black Cats, viewing his journey as all part of his long term progression.
“It was a big move for me coming all the way from Australia to the English Championship,” he said. "It was a big step and that comes with time - so it’s never been a case of frustration or anything like that.
“It’s more about a progression in my career. Coming to Hibs has turned out to be a good decision.
“I’m come here to learn the aerial and the physical side of the game. It’s a very high standard in terms of the teams that you play, the speed of the competition, the way the fans get into it. It helps me a lot.”
Reuniting with Montgomery has been a blessing for Triantis, where he also has Socceroos Martin Boyle and Lewis Miller for company.
“That familiarity with the boss has been good because and has helped me fit in quickly,” he said. “With a six month loan you need to adapt fast and the gaffer has really helped me do that.”
High on Triantis’ wish list, beyond trying to help Hibs nail down a European spot, is a Socceroos breakthrough.
“I hope something can happen as soon as possible - representing your national team is something every player wants to do in their career,” he added.
“I’m training and playing as well as I can to try and make that step. It’s every player’s dream to come to Europe and see where it might take you in terms of the national team.
“Ultimately it’s all down to opinions and hopefully I can be on the right side of that.
“I’ve picked up little things ever since I’ve arrived and even before that. I think I’ve grown a lot in the last 12 or 18 months.
“The player I am today isn’t the player I’ll be next week or in a year’s time.”
