Fringe Socceroo James Jeggo has emerged as a likely replacement for Melbourne City’s departed Moroccan star Hamza Sakhi, with Hibernian understood to be willing to release the gritty midfielder with six months left on his contract.
Jeggo, 31, has lost his automatic starting spot at Easter Road under the watch of new coach Nick Montgomery, and may be open to a return to the A-League where he featured for Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United before embarking on an eight-year overseas odyssey which took him to Sturm Graz, Austria Wien, Aris, AS Eupen, and finally the Scottish Premiership.
The 15-cap Socceroo - who failed to make the 2022 World Cup squad - has made 20 league appearances for Hibs this season, nine of which have come off the bench.
But he’s only featured fleetingly in recent months - his most recent appearance and possibly last for the Edinburgh club coming as a second half substitute in the 3-0 home loss to Rangers overnight.
City coach Aurelio Vidmar found himself scrambling for an emergency signing after Sakhi jetted back to France permanently earlier in this week due to pressing family issues - just two weeks after inking a permanent deal following his August loan from Ligue 2 Auxerre.
Jeggo was a regular for Hibs in his debut season, making 16 appearances for the club after arriving in the Scottish Capital in January, 2023.
But Montgomery has driven the club in a different direction since parachuting in from Central Coast Mariners, placing the emphasis on blooding youngsters whenever possible.
