Socceroos midfielder James Jeggo had a superb debut for Greek giants Aris as the Thessaloniki club topped the Greek Super League with a 3-1 win.
Jeggo started and played a full match on his debut for the club, only a month after signing for the Greeks, and was instrumental in Aris' defensive and attacking efforts as the club eventually got over the top of Greek minnows Lamia.
Jeggo saved Aris in his first performance after the club had conceded a penalty and looked to be lagging behind their opposition, sticking his head in front of an opponent's boot to make a goalline clearance, eventually winning a free kick when a goal looked certain.
Jeggo had previously spent four strong years in the Austrian Bundesliga with leading club Austria Wien, who were keen to keep him before the Socceroo's departure, and looked very comfortable at Super League level.
Jeggo was set on joining Aris after conversations with the club led him to believe that he would play a key role in their on-field success this season, as Aris try to improve on a disappointing fifth placed finish last campaign.
Jeggo turned down English and Portugese interest to join Aris and while it's still very early days, looks set to improve on the disappointing recent record of Australians heading to the Super League.
“There were a number of other opportunities in Portugal and England that we were considering, but when Aris came to the table and sold us the project it was really a no-brainer at this time of his career,” he said after joining the club.
