Uruguay striker Luis Suarez said on Monday that his team achieved the goal they were aiming for by putting in an improved performance, following their final World Cup group-stage match against Russia.
Uruguay finished top of Group A after inflicting a first defeat on the hosts Russia, who went down 3-0 in Samara on Monday.
Suarez, who was named the man of the match, gave his side the lead just ten minutes into the game after firing a free-kick into the bottom right corner.
"That's what we wanted. We wanted to improve our play during the World Cup. After two 1-0 wins [against Egypt and Saudi Arabia] we wanted a more impressive score. I'm happy that we progressed and became the first in our group," Suarez told journalists.
Uruguay's victory means that they will go into the knockout stage as Group A winners and will play the Group B runners-up in their round of 16 match.
