On Sunday (AEST), Group A winners Uruguay beat Portugal 2-1, eliminating reigning European champions from the tournament. Suarez assisted his teammate Edinson Cavani to score the opener seven minutes into the game.

"That level of dedication, with which we played from the very beginning of the match and until the last minute, was incredible," Suarez said.

"We knew that we wouldn't get many goal-scoring opportunities so we had to take them cold-bloodedly.

"We're very happy to advance at the World Cup, (we are) very happy that our fans continue to support us." 

In the quarter-final, Uruguay are set to face France, who knocked out two-time World Cup winners Argentina in a dramatic 4-3 clash. The game will take place at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Saturday (12am AEST).

"We have some top level players and good young ones. We'll try to do our best in this match as well," Suarez added.

The 31-year-old forward, who is Uruguay's all-time leading scorer with 53 international goals, has netted two goals at the tournament so far.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off on June 14 and will continue until July 15, with the matches being played in 11 cities across Russia.
