EXCLUSIVE: Tasmania insist they are still in the mix for the A-League's 12th licence but urgently need to convert goodwill into cash within an eight week deadline.
Canberra's push for a place in the competition received a high-profile assist last week with the Socceroos clash staged in the ACT.
Tasmania United also want to join the party but the time is rapidly approaching where they will have to show Football Federation Australia the colour of their money.
The bid is hopeful of securing investment from the Tasmanian government to complete a feasibility study and talks with potential investors are ongoing.
However the FFA will want concrete proof the necessary investment is in place.
Bid team leader John McGirr told au.fourfourtwo.com today: "I think eight weeks is the timescale we're looking at. We want to be able to go to the FFA and have that cheque or letter of intent (from a backer)."
With Melbourne strongly tipped to land the 11th spot in the competition, Tasmania see themselves in a fight with western Sydney, South Coast and Canberra for spot number 12.
McGirr said: "We've been told we are still in the mix for the 12th licence but I think eight weeks will be D-Day for that spot."
Both Hobart and Launceston would be used as bases for the Tasmania United franchise and officials are confident that support would be there, especially with over 14,000 registered players in the state.
McGirr and his colleagues issued a rallying cry back in late November and it seems the message remains the same.
Back then he said: "In terms of a four lap race, we're into the final lap. Now we have to collect (the money) on that final lap.
"We've had a lot of positive talks but if this is to happen then yes, it's now put your money where your mouth is."
