EXCLUSIVE: Tasmania's A-League bid chief says an official launch is the signal for fans and firms to put their money where their mouth is.
The Tasmanian A-League Taskforce has launched its website and is now looking to push hard for entry into the competition.
John McGirr and his taskforce colleagues are feeling confident but they know the dream of Tasmania United in the A-League will only become reality if sufficient funds can be generated.
A feasibility study into all aspects of a bid is about to be carried out with the team confident it will show there is a pathway to ultimate success.
McGirr told au.fourfourtwo.com today: "In terms of a four lap race, we're into the final lap. Now we have to collect (the money) on that final lap.
"We've had a lot of positive talks but if this is to happen then yes, it's now put your money where your mouth is."
McGirr said it would now be a case of banging the Tasmanian drum a little louder and pursuing an ever more aggressive approach.
He said: "When we started out, it was all under the radar a little bit.
"We didn't want to go shouting from the rooftops if it turned out there wasn't the support there.
"But I think we've moved on, we're feeling positive but the next couple of months will be crucial."
If sponsorship from the public and private sector does not materialise then the prospect of a Tasmanian team in the A-League is extremely gloomy but McGirr says no stone will be left unturned in a bid to get the cheques flowing in.
He said: "The FFA have been in touch for an update and we have to be able to show that we really want this as a state - as well as show the money."
McGirr also said a battle for hearts and minds of youngsters was important, with children present at the launch to demonstrate their ball skills.
If all the pledges of support turned into cash then it would swell the pot to around $2m.
McGirr said: "I think sponsors need to look at just how large a market their product could reach, for shirt sponsorship say. The A-League is beamed out well beyond Australia and think of the markets you could be looking at?"
