October 15 will see the Tasmania United brand unveiled in Hobart as efforts step up to secure a place in Australia’s premier football competition.

Tasmania A-League task force head John McGirr has revealed that the success of North Queensland FC in gaining entry has only strengthened the resolve to turn dreams into reality.

And should Tasmania eventually succeed, he admits there will be a ‘thank you’ winging its way to Townsville.

McGirr told au.fourfourtwo.com: “Once we decided we were going to do this we looked at Townsville and thought it was a similar demographic.

“Coincidentally, through business, I had actually worked with a couple of the original consortium up there and was able to talk to them.

“They’ve since moved on to other business opportunities but it was a very useful exercise in speaking to them.

“They obviously didn’t talk about specific and confidential matters relating to their own bid but in a general sense they told us the importance of being able to demonstrate community support.

“Getting business on board and not ignoring smaller businesses was also stressed.

“The financial side is the easiest one to demonstrate to the FFA. You’ve either got the money or you haven’t."

He added: “Launching our website will be an important step in that direction, you have a platform to gauge opinions and see what kind of interest is out there.

“We will launch (Tasmania United) in Hobart on October 15 and we have invited a number of dignitaries, including five different Tasmanian Lord Mayors to attend.”

As for Townsville’s success in gaining entry, McGirr said: “I think it does reinforce our belief that if they can do it, we can do it.

"It also sends out the message that Football Federation Australia is not just looking after the big end of town, so to speak.”
