Melbourne City are set to retain Socceroo Mathew Leckie on a two-year marquee deal, whilst Jamie Maclaren and Curtis Good are off to Asia.
With coach Aurelio Vidmar sealing a two-year contract extension, the inevitable shake up after the club’s penalty shootout elimination final loss to rivals Melbourne Victory is already underway.
On the plus side for Vidmar is Leckie, 33, agreeing to re-sign until 2026, which effectively means he will finish his career at City, whilst centre-back Good will join Thai Premier League champions-elect Buriram United, where former Newcastle Jets coach Arthur Papas was technical director until earlier this year.
Leckie, for all his pedigree, suffered a stop-start campaign marred by injury in 2023-2024, making just 13 appearances with two assists and just one goal.
A fully fit Leckie next season will provide a plank stability at a club facing a rebuild of some significance.
Good’s move, meanwhile, to the nine-time Thai champions represents a significant payday for the 31-year-old defender after six seasons in his second coming at City.
Also jumping aboard the Asian money train, almost certainly, is the club’s A-League all-time leading marksman Maclaren, who looks to have agreed a lucrative multi-year deal with Indian Super League champions Mohun Bagan.
Vidmar is hopeful, though, of keeping playmaker Tolgay Arslan for a second season. Former club Udinese want to groom the 33 year old as their new sporting director, whilst Arslan is keen to explore the possibility of a long term future at City.
